Hi, I'm Marie.

I'm a writer, freelance designer, and content consultant. I help creative people and organizations tell their stories—on the web, through social media, and with special print projects.

I find that many of my clients often feel overwhelmed by the pressure to have an up-to-date website, publish a regular blog, send out weekly e-mail campaigns, and post daily on social media. Part of what I do is try to help clients view these “obligations” as connected opportunities to share their message with the public. This shift in perspective combined with learning how to integrate these tasks into a daily routine can keep them from feeling so daunting or annoying. However, I understand that it's not always feasible to do all of these things when you're running your own business or pursing a passion outside of your 9-5 job. That's why I offer to run social media accounts, write or edit blog posts and e-newsletters, and maintain and update websites.

My background in fine art and painting informs my design process. I always begin with basic elements—color, shape, type. But I never lose track of the purpose of a design. Whether I'm working on a website, a business card, or an event poster, I keep these questions in my mind: Who is the intended audience? What are they looking for? What questions might they have? How can the design answer those questions before they’re even asked?

Both of my parents were English professors, so I was raised with a love and curiosity for language and a respect for grammar and proper punctuation. I'm good at honing in on the central message of other people's writing and helping them organize and clarify their thoughts.

PORTFOLIO

HAND-CODED WEBSITES

MarieHathaway.com

I hand-coded this website. Because I needed to feature so many samples of my work, I opted for a single page design utilizing anchors, a fixed menu, and Lightbox to minimize loadtime.

KimvanAlkemade.com

I also designed and hand-coded this website for author Kim van Alkemade. In preparation for the publication of her debut novel, Orphan #8, Kim wanted to establish a web presence and social media platform. She wanted navigating her website to feel like rumaging through an old card catalog. We worked together to find stock images, original photographs, and fonts to create the right look and feel. I custom designed the social media icons and contact button to look like rubber stamps.

Customized WordPress Sites

FirstLiteracy.org

I worked with the Boston-based nonprofit First Literacy to redesign their existing website with a cleaner design that highlighted their impact on adult learners. I had assisted First Literacy for years in updating and maintaining their original website that had been built for them by a web development firm, but when it came time to re-design I recommended WordPress. After a few tutorials they're now able to make most updates themselves, which enables them to keep the site much more up-to-date. The new site promintently features images of the people First Literacy serves and incorporates easy-to-use widgets to help them promote their events and social media.

Forthcoming site for Carol S. Hyman

I am currently working with author and mindfulness instructor Carol S. Hyman to develop a customized WordPress website that represents both her professional work and her personal writing. The site is not live yet, but here is a preview.

FoxHillKitchens.com

While I did not do the initial design for FoxHillKitchens.com, I help them with maintenance, updates, blog posts, and banners. I also do product photography and graphic design for them (featured here in a composite of elements from their paralax scrolling home page).
